To those who are involved in paediatric anaesthesia in Asia:

In the past, to meet our colleagues in paediatric anaesthesia or to refresh our knowledge, we had to spend a lot of time and money in attending the European or North American meetings on paediatric anaesthesia. But, now we can meet our Asian colleagues at ASPA meeting (you don’t have to suffer from jet-lag). We can exchange our opinions and share common problems unique to us in a very friendly atmosphere. We have been asking our European or North American colleagues to join us and help in making our meetings more active.

Since our inauguration in year 2000, we have had four meetings. The inaugural meeting was in Singapore, the second one in Philippines, the third in New Delhi in northern India, and the fourth again in Singapore last year (2006). What is in the pipe line? The next one will be in Vellore, South India in September 2006, followed by Thailand in the year 2007. We are planning to have a joint meeting with SPANZA (Society for Paediatric Anaesthesia in New Zealand and Australia).

Please remember that, the world is getting smaller through the various modes of communication. You are not alone, we have many colleagues like you, and we hope we can support each other by sharing our problems in pediatric anesthesia and establishing the friendship.

I am looking forward to meeting you at our gatherings, and hoping you will join our society.

Sincerely,

Masao Yamashita, MD

President,
The Asian Society of Paediatric Anaesthesiologists
